vmware workstation 6.5 on a host with OSSv4

Postby adamk » Tue Oct 27, 2009 12:44 pm

I recently installed vmware workstation 6.5 on a Slackware 64 box running OSS 4.2 (b 2000/200910071331), with oss_hdaudio. As soon as I try to start a guest, I get prompted that the sound device will start disconnected as "No corresponding device is available on the host". I found the wiki entry that says to change the sound.autodetect line from True to False in the vmx file. Which I did. However, when I start vmware, it still shows up as autodetect in guest machines configuration screen and I get the same error. Is there any way to get this to work?

The solution is pretty easy. You need to not only change sound.autodetect to false, you need to set sound.fileName to /dev/dsp
