OSS stops working after update to Kubuntu 10.04

After updating to Kubuntu 10.04, OSS has suddenly stopped working. I went through the steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound to ensure it was still installed correctly. Here are the outputs of some random commands:

Note that I randomly receive messages like the following:

Testing the OSS default output at the System Settings/Multimedia panel gives the following error:

I'm using an Audigy 5 channel sound card (though have never been able to get any but the front speakers to actually work). Also, my mixer now only has channels for Pcm, 3D-depth, and 3D-center (where it used to have about a dozen channels).

Odd. Are the modules loaded? Does "lsmod | grep osscore" show anything? If not, run "sudo soundon" and check if the init script (/etc/init.d/oss there?) still exist. If it does show something, run "sudo ossdetect -d -v" and "sudo ossdevlinks -v -r". After either of these, run "osstest" to see if sound playback works.

well, guess there's something else going on. osstest works fine after running your checks. however, it still doesn't work from firefox or amarok, nor do system sounds.

This is either an app configuration problem or a weird OSS issue... Does "ossplay /usr/share/sounds/*.wav" play anything? If so, than it's an app problem. In that case, try to get pulse working via this method.

Try running "sudo ossdetect -d -v" and "sudo ossdevlinks -v -r" and try again with osstest/ossplay.
