How to install skype static

Postby capo » Mon Jun 28, 2010 4:36 pm

Hi All
Dell studio 15 with ubuntu 9.10 karmic

I have downloaded skype_static-2.0.0.72-oss.tar.bz2
Unpacked it, I dont understand the installation section in Readme
If you are using one of the distribution-specific packages, simply run the
"skype" executable.

If you are using the dynamic and statically linked generic versions, you
will need to choose a path for Skype to exist in. We recommend copying the
skype binary to /usr/bin and installing sounds/, lang/ and avatars/ into
the /usr/share/skype directory.

Which of the above do I use?
A noob as you can see
Thanks in anticipation

Hi

I have installed skype static and find that the video works but on testing the audio,
it doesnt work.
I am presented with options of dev/dsp and 0-4 for sound in sound out and ringing.
The make a test sound is greyed out
Tried many permutations and they dont workTest call produces ringing but no playback
Also tried applications/sound/sound recorder with result of no change in level whilst speaking

Some help would be appreciated.

Your skype is the 2.0.0.72 OSS version and not some other install, right? OK. First, lets check if recording works at all. Try 'ossrecord - | ossplay -' and try to get an echo. If not, we have to play with the mixer a bit - try changing jack.black.mode1 (or mode2 or mode3) to "input" (e.g. "ossmix jack.black.mode1 input") and see if recording works at all (again with ossrecord test). Once it does, try to setup skype and other recording apps again.

He has, perhaps, PulseAudio installed.
skype-static-oss is not likely to work with PulseAudio.

Many Skype users have already removed PulseAudio for this or that reason
