I tried LOTS of stuff, to no effect...
The symptom: EVERYTHING looks normal, except nothing can be heard, like it would happen if your speaker was turned off... The output of everything (even osstest, except for the actual audio) is fine. Also I am sure that all the speakers tested are working fine (I tested with Windows, I have more than one set of speakers)

The story: I installed OSS4 once, it worked fine, until it expired (silly stuff...), also I had installed a new soundcard, so I re-installed OSS4 from source.
After installing OSS4 from source, I ran "osstest" and everything sounded WONDERFUL.
Until I rebooted, after the reboot, I never heard a sound again from OSS4.

Now explaining my setup: I have 3 soundcards, one is the onboard chip, it is disabled on the BIOS, the other is a crappy Crystal Fusion, that I use ONLY FOR MIDI (there are no other jacks on it), and the main (and mentioned new soundcard) is a Audigy SE (or something like that...)

First, you remove oss
Then, you remove the folder /usr/lib/oss

Then, you may try to install again.

It makes sense to train with a LiveCD first.

Do you have Ubuntu, or Debian, or what?

I am using Fedora 12 with a custom kernel that I compiled to make OSS work (the default kernel disliked OSS)

Anyway, I found something even more wierd.

I rebooted, and found no sound on windows too.
I removed the power cord, and booted windows again. sound worked.
rebooted to fedora, sound stopped.
rebooted to windows, sound stopped.
removed the power cord, booted windows. sound worked.
rebooted to windows again. sound worked.
booted fedora. sound stopped.
booted windows. sound stopped.
removed power cord, booted fedora, sound stopped.
booted windows. sound stopped.


This made me reach the following conclusion: For some reason, OSS is disabling the sound card, and the only way to reset it, is removing the power from the card. upon doing that, it returns to normal operation, until I attempt again to use OSS (that disables it again).

As I remember, I similar problem was reported for Ubuntu and Windows, but for ALSA.
It was fixes by changing something in ALSA config.

In nature, it might be a kernel problem, first of all. There are kernel patches for Arch, and Ubuntu (PPA repositories), there should be something for Fedora too, I presume.

Hmm.. Do you recall which OSS version you used? Maybe you can try building a previous stable version which is the same as the one you used. Erase /usr/lib/oss and rebuild that version (you already know how to build OSS I see) and see if that works.
