help configuring, no sound in main speakers (laptop)

Hi, I installed oss4 on debian testing and sound just works for the main jack input (first of the two headphones input form left to right in a dell inspiron 1420 laptop) but cannot get the sound working in the main speakers. the second jack/headphone input works as "mode side" :P, not very useful. sorry if this is a dumb question.

First, did you test with "osstest"? If so, try it. Second, trying changing "misc" in the mixer controls to 0,0 and test again.

yes, I tryied with "osstest -l" but laptop speakers doesn't sound in any loop, altough:

No problem.

First, try turning up all the sliders in ossxmix and test again.
Second, try adding the following line to /usr/lib/oss/conf/oss_hdaudio.conf: "hdaudio_noskip=7". Then restart OSS with "sudo soundoff" and "sudo soundon" commands. See there are any new mixer controls (via ossxmix or ossxmix), and try to change those (paste the new ossmix output here).

added. new elements now appear, but regarding OSS, in dmesg I can read :

I don't have any command like "soundon" or "soundoff". I don't know if this is about some kind of "debianized" oss4 (as any other package on debian) or the package in debian testing is corrupted. that would be strange in consideration that sound works in someway as described in the first post.

for the record, I also can't find any folder as /usr/lib/oss/scripts or something. configuration files are on /etc/oss4/ but there aren't any script folder or $bashscript.sh utility

I just made a test with osstest -f and sound works with the first headphone input as always, but still no sound from laptop speakers

i really want to be able to use oss4 in a daily basis and for instance I must use debian for work (or I would be using arch, my usual distro until a couple weeks ago, where oss4 seems to work better)

You may also try Gentoo. It is said to be "cool".

Sorry for not replying earlier. Anyhow, I did notice you're using build 2003 while the latest is build 2004. You can try uninstalling oss package, downloading the deb from the website, and installing that. Also, try changing jack.internal.mode1 in ossmix: "ossmix jack.internal.mode1 front" and then osstest again. As far as distros are concerned, I'm fine with my debian/unstable...

I followed your suggestions but sadly didn't work even after "played" with the mixers. but now i'm back with alsa. I will try again when I could spend some more time with it anytime later (i should give more data then)

are you using oss from the repos on sid?
