[SOLVED] ASUS Xonar STX Questions (ossmix Options)...

Postby adamlau » Thu Oct 20, 2011 8:23 am

What does the 'ext.monitor.analog' option do? Sound plays through the analog line outs regardless of ON, or OFF.

Code: Select all
$ ossmix
Selected mixer 0/CMedia CMI8788
Known controls are:
ext.monitor.analog ON|OFF (currently ON)

Does the 'spdif-out.adc/dac' option affect the analog path in any way (I presume not)?

Code: Select all
spdif-out.adc/dac ON|OFF (currently ON)

What is the difference between 'Consumer' and 'Professional'?

Code: Select all
spdif-out.pro <Consumer|Professional> (currently Professional)

What does 'spdif-out.copy' refer to? Copy what?

Code: Select all
spdif-out.copy ON|OFF (currently OFF)

What does 'spdif-out.pre-emph' refer to? Pre-emphasize what?

Code: Select all
spdif-out.pre-emph ON|OFF (currently OFF)

What does 'spdif-out.vbit' refer to? Virtual bitrate?

Code: Select all
spdif-out.vbit ON|OFF (currently OFF)

OSS 4.x User's Guide (oss_cmi878x) indicates the presence of an 'oss_cmi878x.conf' which does not reside in '/usr/lib/oss/conf'. Does anyone else have this file present?

What does the 'ext.monitor.analog' option do?
Mix the analog input into the analog output.

Does the 'spdif-out.adc/dac' option affect the analog path in any way (I presume not)?
It selects what is played on the S/PDIF output.

What is the difference between 'Consumer' and 'Professional'?
None at all because the hardware does not have this switch. (Apparently, the driver writer incautiosly believed the datasheet.)

What does 'spdif-out.copy' refer to? Copy what?
"Copyright asserted". If set, the device that receives the S/PDIF data should not allow to record it.

What does 'spdif-out.pre-emph' refer to? Pre-emphasize what?
It labels the data as being recorded with pre-emphasis; the device that receives the S/PDIF data should deemphasize it.

What does 'spdif-out.vbit' refer to? Virtual bitrate?
Validity bit. If off, the data is labeled as being valid PCM data; if set, the data is labeled as being valid data of another type such as Dolby or DTS.
