[SOLVED] ls: cannot access / dev / dsp *: No such file...

Postby Matti » Sat Apr 07, 2012 11:25 am

I'm using OSSv4 build 2006 compiled from Mercurial and it was working great, but yesterday something broke. I've booted into my Ubuntu 11.10 and I couldn't get sound output from programs. I've decided to reinstall oss-linux (that didn't resolve problems) and then I've compiled the package again, installed it and still no sound.

When looking at soundon.log there is this error message: ls: cannot access / dev / dsp *: No such file or directory and there are no dsp files or folders in the /dev, but earlier when sound was working there were there. I can't run any of the Open Sound programs like osstest, ossinfo, ossxmix: /dev/mixer: No such file or directory or just Terminated.

I don't want to go back to ALSA and PulseAudio. Has anybody encountered a similiar problem or know how to fix it.

Try running 'sudo ossdevlinks -v -r'.

I've tried that before and now it doesn't print anything in terminal. When looking at contents of /dev there aren't any dsp symlinks.

It doesn't print anything? It should print at least one line if -v is used... Is OSS actually loaded? Please paste 'lsmod' output here.

Second, if oss is loaded, lets try symlinking /dev/dsp ourselves, to see if it otherwise works. Try 'sudo ln -s /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0 /dev/dsp' and try playing something (like with osstest).

Lastly, if the above works, try running 'sudo /usr/sbin/ossdevlinks -v -r' command again, and check dmesg to see if it crashes... Also check 'sudo file /usr/sbin/ossdevlinks'

I'm running Ubuntu with proposed repository enabled (it's for testing, experimental packages) and I think that some new package broke the functionality. I've used today Virtualbox and it complained about kernel modules. Something like that didn't happen for me very long time. I had to run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup manually and while the kernel modules builded without problems just like the OSSv4 ones there were error message: * modprobe vboxpci failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.

So kernel issue? Lets try to force a rebuild of the OSS modules, maybe it would help:

chdir to /usr/lib/oss/build
run "sudo sh install.sh"
Reload OSS with "sudo soundoff" and "sudo soundon"
Try again ossdevlinks, osstest, etc.

Unfortunately that didn't help.

Re: ls: cannot access / dev / dsp *: No such file or directo

Well, the modules weren't actually unloaded per soundoff output. I hate to say this, but perhaps try a reboot if you haven't already rebooted since that output and then test again (the new build would be already loaded, so no need for soundon/soundoff then)? (Typically, soundoff fails to unload because something is using the card, and we could kill it and then unload, but here there was a crash instead judging by the 'Killed' output).

If you have rebooted since then, well, hmm.. paste 'uname -a' output. I'm curious to see which kernel this is.

[SOLVED] ls: cannot access / dev / dsp *: No such file...

I've solved that problem. The kernel modules were builded, but not correctly. If you looked at the output of my lsmod you would see that many modules were loaded as [permanent] which is not the way it should be. Ubuntu kernel packagers made that mistake before and it was the Virtualbox errors that gave me an idea for the fix. I've found the solution in this bug report of Virtualbox bugzilla Ticket #9891 (closed defect: invalid) vbox kernel module load fail.

I had to make a chroot environment install the kernel headers (linux-headers-3.0.0-19, linux-headers-3.0.0-19-generic) than install the oss package which failed because unmet dependencies. This is expected you should issue the apt-get -f install command and then the installation will complete. If you will get errors about oss directory just create them in /lib/modules/3.0.0-19-generic it's kernel/oss folders. Now you have to copy modules builded in chroot to your actual root environment. The next thing is to reboot the system so the bad modules can be unloaded and those that you builded in chroot could be loaded. Know you have to install Open Sound System again so the appropriate symlinks will be created. This will of course result in bad modules again so you have to copy the good ones from chroot and reboot the system. Know you are finally done. Everything works as intended.

The "FIX" step by step:

1. You can find chroot creation instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebootstrapChroot
sudo apt-get install debootstrap schroot

2. Create a chroot config (refer below for my actual config): sudo nano /etc/schroot/chroot.d/oneiric_i386.conf

3. Create the actual chroot: sudo mkdir -p /srv/chroot/oneiric_i386
sudo debootstrap --variant=buildd --arch=i386 oneiric /srv/chroot/oneiric_i386 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

4. Enter the chroot: schroot -c oneiric_i386 -u root

5. Install your kernel headers (note: these might be different for you): apt-get install linux-headers-3.0.0-19 linux-headers-3.0.0-19-generic

6. Install Open Sound System inside the chroot (note: this will 'fail'): dpkg -i oss-linux-4.2-2006_i386.deb

7. Fix the deps: apt-get -f install

8. At this point you should have the modules in /srv/chroot/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/oss (they might also be modprobed already - check lsmod)

9. Copy these into your actual system's root - /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/oss

10. Install Open Sound package in actual system: sudo dpkg -i oss-linux-4.2-2006_i386.deb

11. Reboot the computer and repeat step 9.

12. Reboot again and listen to your music
