Hello Mr. Dev,
I am hoping that you can please answer a few basic questions for me, regarding OSS installation and configuration on Solaris 10 x86. I have gone through the OSS installation routine, and all seems to proceed well, then I notice that after running soundon and soundconf the options.cfg file is empty. Briefly, from my soundon.log, I have the following entries:

OSS driver loaded OK.

options.cfg will be empty unless you run the soundconf program and
set some options using the Configuration Options menu.

Your soundon.log looks fine. Did you run /usr/lib/oss/bin/osstest -V and see if there was any audio output?.

Hello Mr. Mazumdar, and thank you for the reply, and for clearing up that unless deliberatly altered, the options.cfg file will be empty. To answer your quest regarding the osstest binary, yesy, I have tried running it, as follows:

sudo /usr/lib/oss/bin/osstest -V

This command results in output coming through the left headphone channel, but it sounds sort of like a gieger counter -a lot of clicking. Is there any other output I can provide you with to help clarify this situation? For reference, below is the output from "ossinfo -v", and
also an excerpt from the soundon.log file. Perhaps you will recognize a flaw here:

Hi,

What is the make and model of your machine?. One thing you
can try is to disable ACPI: type eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2
Also you can add one more line to /etc/system:
set pcplusmp:apic_forceload=-1

Now reboot and try to see if that problem goes away.

Right the Sony VAIO GRX560 is one of the problematic devices. There is
something do to with ACPI bios that Solaris doesn't handle properly.
This used to be the problem on Linux as well but after they got ACPI
support into the kernel, the drivers work.

Once thing you can try is to open an window and do a "ping" to some
remote host and then try to run osstest and see if that works. The
problem is that the ACPI bios doesn't forward the interrupts correctly
to the audio device. The ICH drivers work fine in our Intel 845 desktop
boards and also work fine with IBM laptops so it's not a driver issue.

Hello Mr. Mazumdar,

Thank you for the clarification regarding audio functionality on this machine. It is dissappointing to find out that sound will not work on this computer with this particular operating platform, though in perspective, going without music is a small price to pay for being able to run and train on Solaris from my home computer. -Furthermore, the hard drive of this computer is large enough that it will comfortably accomdate installing Linux, in addition to Solaris, so ultimately, this ACPI/audio quirkfor Solaris on the Vaio, is no big deal.

Despite that I say all of this, I do appreciate the time you invested in helping me, and regret that from the beginning, I did not mention the model name, therein sparing you the effort exerted. Again, thank you for your help, and best wishes as regards to your company's product and future! -Omar.
