No sound with 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller, SXCE

Postby gcarrillo » Wed Jun 20, 2007 9:36 pm

Hi,

I am trying to get the audio working in a Dell Latitude D830 laptop with Solaris Express Community Edition (build 66). The laptop has the Santa Rosa chipset, i.e. 965GM chipset. The audio controller is the 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller, with PCI ID "8086,284b". Here are some messages seen during boot that may be relevant:

Code: Select all
Jun 20 15:59:21 Whitebook hdaudio: [ID 486316 kern.notice] NOTICE: Unknown HDA codec 0x838476a0
Jun 20 15:59:21 Whitebook hdaudio: [ID 486316 kern.notice] NOTICE: Unknown HDA codec 0x14f12c06
Jun 20 15:59:21 Whitebook npe: [ID 236367 kern.info] PCI Express-device: pci1028,1fe@1b, hdaudio0
Jun 20 15:59:21 Whitebook genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] hdaudio0 is /pci@0,0/pci1028,1fe@1b

Can I get some assistance with troubleshooting this?

Thanks!

Two codecs

Postby gcarrillo » Fri Jun 22, 2007 6:32 am

Dev informs me that my machine has two codecs - one is a Sigmatel codec (probably the main codec) and an HD Modem codec. The problem is that OSS is picking up my modem codec as an audio codec, and they would need access to the hardware to debug. I will try to give him access to my machine .

I appear to have a similar issue with the Lenovo T61, which uses the same chipset.

Any fixes would be appreciated.

Hello,

I've just downloaded latest version 1006 and tried it on SXDE 9/07 (build 70a) on a Dell Latitude D830.

I don't have any sound. Here is the modinfo and message relating to it:

# modinfo | grep -i oss

So version 1006 seems closer to a solution, but still no sound !

Any way to get this working ? I really need my mp3 to work !

Hi Dev,

I just did and I was able to play a mp3 file using xmms or realplayer on the line-out...but not the speakers...

Wow, I finally got some sounds out.

Now, how do I get sounds out of the builtin speakers ?

Thank's.

To me it looks like you still have an unrecognized codec.

Yes, on reboot I'm still getting the unknown codec error.

Add +1 for the same problem. Laptop is Sony Vaio VGN-FZ17G.

@gcarillo, could you please let me know what you did with ossxmix to get output in Line Out (Headphones, I assume). Something would be better than nothing.

Waiting eagerly for a fix.

Thanks

The sound from the headphones was actually working before I did anything with ossxmix; ossxmix just allowed me to see the levels. Sounds like you may be in the same boat as Mitdasein, with unrecognized codecs still.

Mitdasein, this appears to be the unrecognized codec you have:
