OSS 4.0 1015 Errors & non-functional sound on Solaris X8

Postby bdssltdprc » Sun Jun 15, 2008 5:59 am

Several items:
1- When attempting to install ( via pkgadd) OSS 4.0 I get a fatal crash while trying to install the drivers IF I'm running the pkgadd from a terminal session under the gnome GUI.
If I switch to single user command console the install works.

BTW- this crash invalidates the boot archive (at best) and can render the Solaris install toast (at worst) requiring a re-install to recover.

2- The OSS package fails to produce sound on my machine using a SB0090 (Audigy) PCI sound card. The hardware works ( I booted the machine in Winders XP to test) flawlessly.

I see that there are some warning messages in the /var/adm/messages log about IRQ and namespace issues perhaps this is a clue as to the problems.
Also the OSS identifies the card as an Audigy2 NOT as an Audigy- not sure what the details of the differences might be or what the impact of that misidentification might be

Any ideas on what to do to make the card actually produce sound under OSS?
I'm using just a simple 2 speaker analog output (headphones actually ) plugged into the Line_Out 1 connector on the card.

Thanks.

Hardware-
Tyan Tiger MPX, AMD XP 200+ with 3GB ram, GeForce3 Ti200 AGP Video
This is an old machine ( a freebie actually) but runs Solaris X86 just fine.

osstest doesn't produce any sound and has to be run form a command console ( as noted in other posts) to avoid a conflict with the SADA device.

More info

Postby bdssltdprc » Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:23 am

OK- un-installed 1015 ( in single user mode) rebooted, installed 1016, rebooted
I still get NOTHING from the sound card.

The ossxmix application has activity ( all the little light flash indicating that something is happening) while attempting to play sound via ossplay and real player.

FYI- the hardware works flawlessly under windows XP SP2
Does ANYONE have any idea what to do to make this work?
Anyone have sound working on Solaris X86 with any other sound card?

osstest ( when run from command console) does NOT work.

Code ?

Postby bdssltdprc » Thu Jun 19, 2008 7:04 am

OK- after searching these forums I saw a reference to a similar issue involving the Audigy and no sound ( digital vs. analog )

After looking at the driver I noticed 2 things-
1: the setup for the dev->card_type looks like:
snip.....
else if (device == PCI_DEVICE_ID_AUDIGY)
{
devc->card_name = "SB Audigy2";
devc->card_type = SB_AUDIGY | SB_AUDIGY2;
}

2:this check looks like this:
snip......

/* switch the shared SPDIF/OUT3 to DIGITAL or ANALOG mode */
/* depending on whether the port is SPDIF or analog */

if (devc->card_type == SB_AUDIGY)
{
reg = INL (devc->osdev, devc->base + 0x18) & ~A_IOCFG_GPOUT0;
val = (audigy_digital_din) ? 0x4 : 0;
reg |= val;
OUTL (devc->osdev, reg, devc->base + 0x18);
}

Not sure if it's relevant to the issue but it is a coding style/usage question
Thanks

Oh, you mean http://4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8843#8843 ? This shouldn't affect you unless you're using digital output. Maybe you should try build 1016.

Sorry, I missed that you have changed to 1016. Anyway, you're right about this being a bug. You could change the code, recompile, and see if that was the issue. I was simply mentioning that the issue was discussed here earlier.

BTW, I've already emailed the oss-devel list regarding this:
