Newbie with config problems

Hi,
I'm running Solaris 10 on a Gateway Solo 1450. It got ESS 1988 Alegro PCI. At any rate, I installed PCIonly version first. Worked OK, volume was lower than I expected, but not bad. I had to do soundon every time I restarted. Then once when I did soundon, the whole system crashed and it appeared that I killed the OS. So I took the advice from Dev and installed the 4.0 version after uninstalling the old one and some machinations trying to get it to reboot to the OS. At any rate, that works now, but the sound is much lower than it was with 3.99. Is there some way to adjust this? Is there some place I can find the various commands for the app? Here's the results I get from osstest.

Can anyone give me a clue what this might mean? What other device? Is there some kind of graphic method of making adjustments that I'm just not finding (since the unix apps don't seem to affect the sound)?

Use ossxmix to control the volume. Look at the allegro.conf file to enable the allegro_amp option if your mixer device is an ESS device (type cat /dev/sndstat).

I was able to change the setting in allegro.conf, but I'm afraid I don't know what to do with the ossmix (I warned you I'm a newbie; actually that was the first time I was successful in finding a file (allegro.conf) by name with find). If you have a moment, could you tell me exactly what I should do with this:

OK, I get it. This ossxmix thingie is the graphic interface. It's right here next to ossmix at usr/bin/ossxmix. I'll bet there's some way to add it to the launch menu. ... That totally does the trick. Does anybody know how to make these settings stick through restart?

Run savemixer.
