new to FreeBSD - looking for musicians advice

Postby Lazy » Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:55 am

I'm considering switching from WindowsXP to FreeBSD.
I'm not very knowledgeable on computers though :?

My main use for computer is with musicprograms like Cubase, Sibelius and Band-in-a-Box.

Can you give me some advice/tips for:
- a program (like Cubase) with which I could do decent home-recordings (multi-track, acoustic music plus MIDI).
- one similar to Sibelius (music notation and MIDI)

I have a LynxONE soundcard, which I believe will work with FreeBSD :?:

wrong forum?

If this is more a forum for DJ's and such (seeing all the digital soundstuff here makes me suspect it) please tell me.
Is there a place where musicians discuss FreeBSD :?:

Audacity has nice multi-track recording. If you want MIDI, try LMMS.

thanks kash

I wonder why there's only techno in LMMS's demo's?
I'd like to hear an emulation of double bass and jazzpiano 8)

Meanwhile I did find a whole list of audio-software for unix, but am still open for suggestions concerning alternatives to Band-in-a-Box and Sibelius/Finale/Encore...

<snip< I have a LynxONE soundcard

I gave up after trying all sorts for weeks, but I still want to get away from MSwindows.
Can someone explain what it implies that my souncard is "ASSL" (or something like that) and how I can make it compatible wit "OSS"?

Simple lingo please; I'm not familiar with all this.
Thanks on forehand.

that should read "ALSA"

I just saw a forum section dedicated to OSS and ALS emulation, but it's like Chinese to me
