oss and sb live

Hi, I've got a new SB Live LS on my FreeBSD 5.3
box and I'm thinking of giving OSS a try. Right
now the sound I have on the box is great but there
is little tuning I can do with it... basically I can change
the volume .

I also run ALSA on my Slackware Linux box and from
what I can tell OSS seems similar, will give me more
tuning options like I have with ALSA on Linux. Mainly
I listen to cd's and radion broadcasts (NPR and BBC radio).

Will I still be able to use xmms, gnome-cd,
gnome-volume-control with OSS?

OSS gives you more than ALSA!. You get equalizers and volume controls for each of the audio channels (alsa can't do it!).

Sure on FreeBSD, you will have no probelems with gnome-cd and gnome volume since they are designed for OSS and get set for the OSS API by default (only on Linux do you have problems with newer distros that remove OSS API support and compile these apps for ALSA).
