more hic ups

Just finished installing open sound on my laptop i set oss to load on startup and the sound works but its like talking on a bad mobile phone, on and off every second.

OS: FreeBSD 5.3
LAPTOP: Compaq Armada m700
Sound: ESS Maestro-2E PCI

I have read previous posts and selected to boot with ACPI off.

im not sure if there is anything else to try?

any hints?

Slight update

I played about a bit

mp3's now work without hic ups, however video is the same, the video itself plays fine but the audio is very bad
