Kernel panic on FreeBSD 6.0-BETA1

Postby Guest » Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:32 am

I have experienced a repeatable kernel panic on FreeBSD 6.0-BETA1 and a slightly older 6.0-CURRENT installation on the same hardware. Previously I had 5.4-STABLE on the same hardware and the OSS drivers worked just fine. I did change the drivers to the 6-CURRENT ones too.

My hardware:
ASUS P4P800-MX
Intel ICH5
ADI AD1888 AC97 codec

The kernel panic right after running "./soundon":
Code: Select all
oss: Probing the hardware for MPU-401 (UART) failed.
AC97: Codec/mixer chip doesn't seem to be alive.
oss: Probing the hardware for Intel ICH AC97 audio controller failed.

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode
fault virtual address    = 0x0
fault code               = supervisor read, page not present
instruction pointer      = 0x20:0xc22392fa
stack pointer            = 0x20:0xd450ebc0
frame pointer            = 0x20:0xd450ebc4
code segment             = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b
                         = DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1
processor eflags         = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0
current process          = 1006 (sndconf)
trap number              = 12
panic: page fault
Uptime: 7m19s
Dumping 478 MB (2 chunks)
  chunk 0: 1MB (159 pages) ... ok
  chunk 1: 479MB (122416 pages) 463 447 ...
Like I said, OSS drivers worked with 5.4-STABLE on the exact same box, so it is not a hardware problem. The native FreeBSD sound drivers produce sound.

Now I found that it will panic if the Virtual Mixer is loaded. If that is not there and just ICH5, it will not panic and the driver will load. In either case, the driver will not produce sound. I think this is due to the failure to detect the ADI AD1888 codec.

Thanks,

Hi,

We cvsup'ed the system and the kernel that was built was FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT (?!?!? - did they give up on FreeBSD 6 and jump to 7?)

ANyway download:
http://www.4front-tech.com/release/oss3 ... ENT.tar.gz

And see if it works on 6.0-BETA1.

Thank you for your quick reply, dev. Unfortunately I still got the same results. Kernel panic with the Virtual Mixer loaded and no AC97 codec attachment without the Virtual Mixer. Here is my soundon.log from when I was able to get the driver to load without a panic:

To clear things up for you too, the FreeBSD 5.x series will be coming to an end (they plan on a 5.5 in September 2005) and 6.x will take over. 6.0 is planned to be released in August 2005 as a replacement for the 5.x series. So 6.x actually has a -STABLE branch (which is what BETA1 is right now) which is why -CURRENT is 7.x. I wouldn't try to compile drivers for 6.x on -CURRENT now anyways. I don't know how far they could have gotten away from the 6.x base, but you know.

If you need any more info, just let me know.

Thanks again,

To clear things up for you too, the FreeBSD 5.x series will be coming to an end (they plan on a 5.5 in September 2005) and 6.x will take over. 6.0 is planned to be released in August 2005 as a replacement for the 5.x series. So 6.x actually has a -STABLE branch (which is what BETA1 is right now) which is why -CURRENT is 7.x. I wouldn't try to compile drivers for 6.x on -CURRENT now anyways. I don't know how far they could have gotten away from the 6.x base, but you know.

If you need any more info, just let me know.

Thanks again,
BSDKaffee

Hi,

The error seems to be:
AC97: Codec/mixer chip doesn't seem to be alive.
oss: Probing the hardware for Intel ICH AC97 audio controller

However I have FreeBSD 5.4 working perfectly on an ICH4 system (Intel motherboard). Only change needed in FreeBSD 6 is a change in the
way FreeBSD loads the device into the internal kernel tables (and the change is just removing 1 parameter).

Can you try booting freebsd without ACPI support and see if the new version works?

Note that if you start OSS and you get warning "some devices failed to initialize" it means the main audio device didn't install and only the virual mixer device installed - so when you play any audio on the virtual mixer device and there is no corresponding physical device, you will get a kpanic (actually we should fix up the software so that vmix never gets installed if
the physical device is not present)

best regards

Hi Dev,

I am unable to boot without ACPI. My box requires it since I cannot disable it in the BIOS (booting just hangs without it). I had the OSS driver working just fine one 5.4-STABLE with ACPI on the exact same hardware. The only error it gave was in probing for the MPU-401 (UART). I don't believe my hardware has MIDI support, so I just ignored it.

When using oss-install, it actually detects the ICH5 and that is all that it loads. I loaded the Virtual Mixer manually (I had to do this on 5.x too). So it looks like the probe for the ICH5 is fine, but the probe for the AD1888 AC97 codec fails. I can't remember, but I believe the AD1888 actually showed up in the list of detected devices in soundconf under 5.x; it does not show up for 6.x.

I have changed nothing with my system as far as the kernel config or the way I installed the OSS drivers, so I am sort of stuck right now.

Thanks,
BSDKaffee

Hi Dev,

I upgraded my one installation to 7.0-CURRENT (Jul-25-2005), but I got the same results. The driver simply won't attach to the codec. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi,

Please give me some time to figure out what's going on with FreeBSD 6.

We're seeing some issues with other devices as well....for instance the Maudio revolution 7.1 seems to give me a EEProm validation error while the same machine has Solaris and Linux working just fine....

OSS ver. 3.99.3c still not working on FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4

Postby BSDKaffee » Thu Sep 15, 2005 7:21 pm

Since my last post in this thread I have upgraded to FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4 and saw that the OSS drivers were updated to version 3.99.3c. I decided to give them a try today to see if the new version fixed the problem with my codec. It seems I have the same results; the codec will not attach. Here is my new soundon.log:

Hi,

I have absolutely no idea why the drivers are failing to activate the AC97 device. Can you see if the nateive FreeBSD drivers work on this machine?

We have tested the Freebsd beta-4 drivers on an ATI IXP300 and an ALI M5451 device - there was only one minor change in the code compared to FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE. Can you tell me if FreeBSD 5.4 with OSS worked oon this machine previously?

Best regards

I had this same problem i used the iso to install. After cvsupping the source the drivers load fine. So hmm cvsup to RELENG_6 and update your base.

Yes, the OSS drivers did work on this exact machine when it was running FreeBSD 5.4. The native FreeBSD sound drivers also work presently, so it is not a hardware problem.

I only experienced this trouble after upgrading to 6.0-BETA1 and subsequently 6.0-BETA4, but the results seem the same on either version. I am indeed using the drivers specified for FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4 and presently I am running FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4.

I am the original poster of this thread by the way, if that helps, I know I originally posted as a Guest. But again, this is my setup:
ASUS P4P800-MX motherboard
Intel ICH5
ADI AD1888 AC97 6-channel audio codec w/ S/PDIF out support

Here is part of my dmesg for the native sound drivers if that helps anything:
Code: Select all
pcm0: <Intel ICH5 (82801EB)> port 0xe800-0xe8ff,0xee80-0xeebf mem 0xfe77b400-0xfe77b5ff,0xfe77b000-0xfe77b0ff irq 17 at device 31.5 on pci0
pcm0: [GIANT-LOCKED]
pcm0: <Analog Devices AD1888 AC97 Codec>
Thanks.

Hmmmm.....I'll have to check my machine which has an Intel ICH4 with AD1980 chip with SPDIF out. Right now it's running FreeBSD 5.4 but I'll check it with 6.0.

OK I've verified that on FreeBSD 6.0-Beta4 the ICH4/ICH5 driver indeed is showing the same symptoms as yours. What's odd is that the FreeBSD 6.0 drivers do work correctly on another ATI IXP300 machine and an ALI M5451 machine. So now I'm cvsuping the Intel ICH4 machine to the CURRENT version and see what happens.
