MIDI / SoftOSS / SB Live?

Is SoftOSS available in the Freeware distribution? I have a Soundblaster Live! 5.1, and I see that under "limitations" the EMU's on-board wavetable is not yet supported. I was hoping to use SoftOSS or something similar to play MIDI. The instructions on the site said to pick the "4Front SoftOSS for xxx" driver, but that is not available to me. I have 3.99.1i according to my .version file.

SoftOSS is now automatically configured if you have 3.99.1i (upgrade to 3.99.2b) and then just install the patch files on the Softoss page in
/usr/local/lib/midia/instruments and use mplay to play MIDI via sblive.

Timdiity is a very good softsynth - perhaps better sounding than the EMU8K synth (Just my personal opinion)

I have a hard time believing that, at least for me, SoftOSS installed by default. I upgraded to 3.99.2b as you can see, but I still have no synth devices. As I said, there's no "SoftOSS" driver available to me when I try to add it using soundconf. I have no /dev/music or /dev/sequencer's. I have a sequencer2, but it's just a symlink to music (which doesn't exist). What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

OK on the SBLive you need to manually add the 4Front Virtual Mixer
(use soundconf->select Add a soundcard). On all other devices Virtual
Mixer gets configured automatically and you get the softsynth.

On SBLive you don't need virtual mixing because SBLive can do hardware mixing and does the same things as softoss.

OK, once I added that device it installed SoftOSS which is now working like a charm. However, isn't it true that OpenSound doesn't yet support on-board MIDI with the SBLive? That is, saying the SBLive "does the same things as softoss" is true, except that it's not yet supported?

Yes we haven't had the time yet to implement the SBLive's hardware midi synth - just too much work and too little time. But it's been on our plate since 2000 to implement SBLive wavetable synth support.
