Ubuntu 10.04 "Waiting for sound system to respond"

I have Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop 64-bit with OSS4 GPL Stable installed and everything appears to be working properly.

However, when I select System > Preferences > Sound, a dialog box displays "Waiting for sound system to respond" but then the sound properties never appear.

Any ideas how to correct this?
