[solved] Sound suddenly stops working correctly

Postby nexx » Thu Jul 29, 2010 6:38 pm

Hi,

i got a problem as follows: i use two sound devices: onboard & creative sb audigy. the audigy is connected to an 5.1 system, onboard plays on a headset. after booting up the system, everything works fine, sound comes from where it should. i configured mpd to play music with /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp0 simultaneously. as i said, after booting, its all fine. if i pause the music and continue it, the audigy-output "crashes"... no sound/music, but all cracking and dizzling, just noise. output to onboard sound still works.
its the same with every other sound-needing application, no matter if flash oder a video or something else.
i should mention, that i previously used a creative sb x-fi music, which i replaced by my old audigy because of the better support under linux.
oss restart doesnt help, only a restart helps, whats quite strange...
i hope anybody can help!

Re: Sound suddenly stops working correctly

nexx wrote:Hi,

i got a problem as follows: i use two sound devices: onboard & creative sb audigy. the audigy is connected to an 5.1 system, onboard plays on a headset. after booting up the system, everything works fine, sound comes from where it should. i configured mpd to play music with /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp0 simultaneously. as i said, after booting, its all fine. if i pause the music and continue it, the audigy-output "crashes"... no sound/music, but all cracking and dizzling, just noise. output to onboard sound still works.
its the same with every other sound-needing application, no matter if flash oder a video or something else.
i should mention, that i previously used a creative sb x-fi music, which i replaced by my old audigy because of the better support under linux.
oss restart doesnt help, only a restart helps, whats quite strange...
i hope anybody can help!

It might be a kernel problem. You may try another kernel, a newer one, for example:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

First of all, you may better try OSS4 with a newer kernel on a LiveCD, to see how it works

igorzwx: thanks, but before i tried it the long way, i just did a clean reinstall from oss, that (almost) did it! no noise anymore :)

one problem lasts: i got no sound on the soundcard from firefox, only the onboard card plays sound e.g. from flash. /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp0 links to /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0 which is the onboard soundcard.
i need to "say" all applications, to use _both_ devices, but how?!

Code: Select all
ll /dev/dsp*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2010-07-29 23:03 /dev/dsp -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0

Do you want to say that your onboard soundcard is now the "default soundcard"?
You may change this, of course, if you want.

Changing the default sound output
http://www.opensound.com/wiki/index.php ... und_output

There is a script /usr/lib/oss/soundon.user

On Terminal:

ls /dev/oss

ossinfo -a

If I understand you correctly, you want all apps to play on _both_ devices at the same time, right? Lets see...

As for Flash, it opens the single /dev/dsp device - this can be changed (see appendix below), but I'm not sure it's the best solution - You can't tell _all_ applications to use both devices, and OSS doesn't have a simple method using vmix to achieve this (there's a more complex method, but I don't think it's good). Maybe the following will work: If you could chain both devices so that everything that plays to one will play on the other, you get this automatically. Say link one of the Audigy's outputs to hdaudio linein, set it to passthrough (I think it's already set that way per your ossmix output), and than everything that plays to the Audigy will play to the hdaudio too.

(Appendix: Flash uses a library call libflashsupport.so to output sound via OSS. The source code (oss/lib/flashsupport.c) can be easily edited. You need to open two devices, and write to both. I can help you with this, but that's not a general solution)

@cesium: Yes. But most important is, that mpd plays on both devices, what it does. Easy to configure. I think i just change the default device as igorzwx said.
Argh, yesterday evening all was quite fine, now I got noise again. GRRR

You got noise after the first reboot. Right?
Could this be reproduced?
1. a new clean install
2. reboot

If you get troubles after the first reboot, the problem might be fixed by setting the "immutable bit".

hi,
it is quite reproducable. meanwhile i disabled the onboard device per bios, soundcard is still noisy. startup -> open music player - play music -> open browser -> pause music -> play music -> noise.
strange is, when i wait some X minutes (dont know exactly how much, some 60min i guess) and continue the music, the noise disappears. pause/play again produces noise...

i will now build oss from source with a patch in oss_sblive.c, i hope this does it. if not, i think i use only the onboard hd-audio and dont mess around anymore.

immutable bit: to which file should i apply it? neither soundon.user, nor legacy_devices, nor osscore.conf did change after the last reboots.

i guess it works... applied this patch to this source and here is the finalized 64bit package

thanks to all helpers, especially cesium for giving me the patch!
