USB Headset microphone not working

Postby Aleks » Mon Dec 20, 2010 11:06 pm

Hello.

I'd recently replaced my PulseAudio+ALSA setup for OSS, and everything is fantastic so far, except that I'm unable to record sound now.

Here's the error that I get with ossrecord:
Code: Select all
~ $ ossrecord -d /dev/oss/usb0d8c000e-2/pcmin0 test.wav
/dev/oss/usb0d8c000e-2/pcmin0: Input/output error

And this is in dmesg:
Code: Select all
oss usbaudio: Audio input timed out on device 3.

This happens both with a fresh compiled OSS from hg and with the OSS in Arch repositories.

Please tell me if you need more information.

Here's my ossinfo:
Code: Select all
$ ossinfo
Version info: OSS 4.2 (b 2003/201012202034) (0x00040100) OSS_HG

USB audio devices are problematic with OSS4: "output is experimental, input is not implemented"
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OSS

A Logitech ANALOG microphone (for 10 EURO) is perfectly suitable for Skype with OSS4 ( pacman -S skype-oss ),
and for Twinkle too ( pacman -S twinkle ) http://www.xs4all.nl/~mfnboer/twinkle/
CD 92 MV (for 9 EURO) is also very good for the purpose

If you need to record a kind of podcast, you may better try Olympus LS-11 PCM Recorder
http://www.amazon.de/Olympus-LS-11-Reco ... -1-catcorr

The Olympus LS-10 is a small hand held lightweight stereo linear PCM (digital) high quality sound recorder sold as a studio in your pocket. The LS-11 is the same and more. Here's our overview and review of both of these powerful devices

The Olympus LS-10 and LS-11 although a little larger than products like the Olympus DS-30 voice recorder, are far superior products. Whilst they can be used as a mere Dictaphone, the high quality audio recorded by this device is suitable for the professional user such as the broadcast journalist, podcaster or musician. The specification of these pieces of kit puts them leagues above many other handheld audio recording devices.

Ah, I see. Might I ask if there is planned support for USB microphones, or my only option really is purchasing a new microphone?

They are doing something about USB drivers. In any case, USB Headsets do not make much sense with OSS4.
You can get much better quality with analog mic (for 10 EURO) and internal soundcard.
