I understand OSS used to work for you? And the driver is loaded... Or is it a new install of OSS?

If it's not a new install, Maybe what happened is when you upgraded to Fedora 14 it restored the ALSA modules, and they prevent OSS from seeing the device... Can you paste the output of 'lsmod'?

It was a fresh install of fedora...and no soundcard was not detected with alsa too. a quick lshw gives following

As you can see audio controller is available, previously it had an "UNCLAIMED" comment with it, just like the modem. I removed alsa and pulseaudio modules.

Please paste output of 'lspci -vnn' for the card... I think 'lspci -s 1f.5 -vnn' should do it.

It seems that I have a similar card:

Code: Select all
$ lspci -s 1f.5 -vnn
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller [8086:24c5] (rev 01)
   Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:0523]
   Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
   I/O ports at 1c00 [size=256]
   I/O ports at 18c0 [size=64]
   Memory at c0000c00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]
   Memory at c0000800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
   Capabilities: <access denied>
   Kernel driver in use: oss_ich
   Kernel modules: snd-intel8x0

Everything seems to work:

Code: Select all
$ ossinfo
Version info: OSS 4.2 (b 2003/201010281526) (0x00040100) OSS_HG
Hg revision: changeset: 917:e300d16046f7, tag: tip, date: Wed Oct 20 04:14:01 2010 +0300, summary: Enhancements to ossplay

OSS was recompiled to enable "Production quality".

Yesterday, I tested Arch LiveCD on this computer. OSS4 was installed over ALSA. Everything worked perfectly.
The manual is here:

Could this be translated into a kind of human language?
Do you know what is LiveCD and how it can be used for testing audio drivers?

If I understood you correctly, there is a technical problem (slow internet, or it is very expensive): you cannot download the ISO image and write it to CD. Right?
My friend in Canada has such problem. If he needs to download something, he has to ask his brother to do this for him.

Try setting "detect_trace=1" in /usr/lib/oss/conf/osscore.conf and attach /var/log/soundon.log here after (re)loading OSS.
