Audigy LS + FreeBSD 5.4 + oss 3994a = LOUD HISS!

Postby vinny » Thu Apr 13, 2006 8:19 pm

I have a new Audigy LS, funning FreeBSD 5.4 and just installed oss 3994a. Anytime audio is playing be it from a flash presentation or from xmms, all I get is a loud hiss. If there is any sound, the hiss is drowning it out. It passes the sound test but what's coming out is a broken up hissing sound - so perhaps something is there but it's just not detectable.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Run soundoff and soundon and see if that helps. In XMMS, configure one of the Virtual Mixer devices and see if that helps. Try this rm /dev/dsp; ln -s /dev/dsp6 /dev/dsp and then run flash or XMMS

That means your hardware is bad or you didn't plug it it correctly because I just tested AudigyLS on FreeBSD 6.0 on both AMD64 and i386 and it works fine.

What chipset is in the LS you're testing? This one doesn't have the emu10k dsp it has the CA0106-DAT. Is it even supported?

Hi,

I have the same problem with loud "hiss" sound. Have you been able to solve it?

Here is the spec for my card:

device = 'CA0106-DAT Audigy LS'
class = multimedia
subclass = audio

When I run the test it starts making that noise..at least I know that all 6 speakers are working ok.:) When I start KDE it freezes for a moment then it continues working fine but gives me this mesasage: Sound server fatal error: CPU overload.aborting. I've configured it as it is said in README.

What am I missing?

I don't know what you're doing to get it to work, dev, but my box isn't so lucky.

MOBO: ECS 755-A2
Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 SE (comes up as audigy LS)
FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE-200606

I've tried a *lot* of different things with this card. The FreeBSD/amd64 OSS driver makes a hiss, the i386 driver makes a hiss, the linux amd64 and i686 drivers hiss. I'm at a loss. I see a lot of people that have this problem, yet you're not willing to look into it, just "it works for me (TM)".
