USB xitel Minilink not working on Solaris 10 U2

Postby skolnick » Mon Jan 01, 2007 9:37 pm

Hi Everybody!

I just installed OSS v4.0 Beta (rc2-build 179) on my Solaris 10 U2 computer (x86, not the x64 one). But it produces no audio at all. When the computer starts, I get this:

Code: Select all
NOTICE: usb_pipe_ctrl_xfer_wait read failed: USB_FAILURE (USB_CB_PROTOCOL_STALL)

I get this twice, then, I get these:

Code: Select all
NOTICE: usb_pipe_ctrl_xfer_wait read failed: USB_FAILURE (CB Err 9)

four times. After that, the computer goes to login screen with no problems, but trying to play an mp3 file with mpg123 results in:

Code: Select all
bash-3.00# mpg123 The_White_Man.mp3
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2 and 3.
Version 0.59r (1999/Jun/15). Written and copyrights by Michael Hipp.
Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more!
THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
audio: I/O error
bash-3.00#

and every other software that uses audio, has no audio output at all. I also see this in dmesg:

Code: Select all

Hi,

The problem may be hardware related. Have you tried to unplug and replug the device and see if that helps?. Give us a URL for the product and we'll take a look to see if we can get a device to test with.

What works:

Sound Blaster AudigyNX
Sound Blaster Mp3+
MAudio Sonica
MAudio Sonica Theatre
Logitec USB speakers
And a few other models

Does the device work with Sun's USB audio driver? I don't know how to configure devices using Sun's USB audio driver.

Hi Dev

Thanks for the hints. Sorry, this device has no official web page anymore, it seems it has been discontinued. However, I got this link:

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Xitel_MDPORT-AN1.html

That's the exact device I got, and they have a photo of its internals (might be useful). I don't think it's a hardware problem, since the machin dual boots with debian linux, and debian makes it work fine. I tried un-plugging and re-plugging it but nothing happened. I have no idea if it works with SUN USB audio driver, but I would guess no because when i just installed Solaris, it gave no audio output either...however I'll dig a bit more on that and tell you.

Hi dev

I got no reply from you yet, but I just tested the latest OSS version (rc8-190) en my solaris 10 computer. It threw the same errors as the previous version (rc2-178 IIRC) but this time, when I rebooted, and did a soundoff/soundon, and then did a osstest. After that, the computer panicked and rebooted. That's not good at all :(. Any help is welcome :)

Regards.

Hi,

Turns out USB only works on Solaris 10 - for some reason on Solaris 11 the code seems to panic the kernel.

Unfortunately finding the fix may take a week or so.

Hi,

Turns out USB only works on Solaris 10 - for some reason on Solaris 11 the code seems to panic the kernel. You may need to run rem_drv vmix and then reboot and see if that works.

It's no problem, dev, I'll wait for the problem to be found and fixed. However, one thing is strange: you say USB only works on Solaris 10, but panicks on 11. But muy PC is running Solaris 10 U2, and however it panicked when I did osstest (however, it does not happen always...only sometimes) but anyway, my USB audio thing does not work at all.

Thanks!

Hi dev

Has any progress been made on this issue? or is it really hopeless and should I get a real sound card? :(

Thanks for any help :)

Try the rc9-999 version again, we updated it yesterday - I'm not sure what else could be the problem with USB audio.

Hi again Dev

I tried again RC9-build 999, same problem. I have also no idea what the problem with this USB thingie may be. All I know is that it works fine using ALSA on linux, and using Windows XP native USB driver (all on the same computer). I've tried disabling/enabling legacy USB in the BIOS, but that did nothing.

Thanks!

Hi!

I just finished the problem buying a cheap "Genius Sound Maker Value 5.1" PCI soundcard, which seems to work fine using OSS 4.0. Too bad the USB thingie won't work...but this card is so cheap an offers way better sound.

Thanks!
